House number 1337, Umkwakwa Street in Kgakala was a hive of activity as dignitaries visited the township to wish gogo Moselantja Kgosi a special happy birthday as she turned 100 years last Saturday May 10. The honorary function, led by the North West MEC for Social Development, Basetsana Susana Dantjie, was aimed at reflecting and acknowledging the lives of people who have surpassed the 100 year old mark.

The event was organized by the Department of Social Development in partnership with Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, Sassa and the National Development Plan.

According to Dantjie, the ceremony was also a gesture by her department towards the dignity of older persons while reflecting on their contribution towards society.

“These are the people who raise the society with love. Even when it comes to elections, they are always there to vote and that’s why as a department, we are committed to making them happy because reaching the age of 100 is a milestone on its own,” she said.

The MEC was full of praises for Kgosi s family for taking good care of the old lady.

“By looking at her you could see that she’s taken care of and it’s not that because we are here today. We must respect our elders while they are still alive,” she added.

Meanwhile, gogo’s son, Ishmael, described her mother as a soft-spoken person who love children very much.

Ward 6 and 7 councillors, Lebogang Medupe and Judah Rampai, spoke on behalf of the Maquassi Hills mayor, Mzwandile Feliti, and District Executive Mayor, Nikiwe, who were both equally committed elsewhere.

Gogo Kgosi is still an active member of the Sizanani Old Age and Fitness Centre and serves as a goalkeeper for the ladies soccer team. Of the 13 children she gave birth to, only six are still alive.

Needless to mention, she was showered with assortments of gifts to make her day a memorable one.
