Lentswe, Jouberton - At Tsamma Secondary School learners who are part of the Glenco Environmental Club are stepping up to fight poverty and hunger in their own school. In just two days, these determined young people filled bags with recyclable materials - not only cleaning their school grounds but taking a powerful step toward helping their school afford food and basic needs.
They learners come from communities where many families struggle with poverty. Often, they come to school hungry. Yet they remain committed - sorting waste, recycling, and leading environmental initiatives that are already creating hope and value. These are not just students; they are young leaders transforming crisis into opportunity.
At Greenland Environmental Nature Conservationists (Glenco), they are deeply inspired by the commitment of the Environmental Clubs, like the one at Tsamma Secondary. Under the Green Flag Programme - which focuses on five pillars: waste management, water and sanitation, land and beautification, green energy, and agro-processing - the learners are taking ownership of real-world issues.
But while their efforts are powerful, the needs are urgent. Many of our schools have no feeding programs. The children are doing everything they can, but they need support to scale their efforts and receive fair value for the waste they collect.
Pheletso Lekwane Mafoka, a dedicated facilitating teacher, captured it best:
“Our learners are not just learning - they’re leading. And what they’re doing at Tsamma shows us that change starts with action.”
