Lentswe, Klerksdorp - There are still no suspects in the gangland shooting of beloved businessman Ronny Mere and his wife, Tsholo in their La Hoff apartment complex earlier this week. Ronny did not survive. His murder and the attempted murder of his wife and Cllr Lebohang Itebogeng sent shockwaves through the community. According to Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, a gang of armed men kicked down their door and opened fire.

“The man and wife were both hit in their upper bodies. Unfortunately, the husband did not survive the attack. His wife was taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition after undergoing surgery,’’ she said.

The councillor called the police after jumping from the first floor balcony. He suffered fractures to his ribs.

“He fled when he heard the commotion at his downstairs neighbours. The assailants also kicked down his apartment’s door and started shooting. He ran several kilometres to a service station where he managed to call for help.’’

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene where it was found that security guards were overpowered inside the guard quarters at the entrance gate. Apparently it was a group of five masked men, travelling in a black VW GTI. “Two stayed with the guards and three went on inside the complex where they went straight for Mere’s residence,’’ said Col Myburgh.

The investigation is ongoing, with no arrests yet. Police are investigating a case of murder, and two cases of attempted murder.

Mere’s family and friends paid tribute to him on social media. “Ronny was a devoted husband and father who prioritised his family above all else. He was a joyful spirit, united with us by a shared passion for music. We will fondly remember his infectious smile and the warmth he showed to everyone around him.’’

His family asked for privacy to help them deal with their loss.

Cllr Itebogeng was not available for comment. His cellphone was off and he moved out of La Hoff Mews.
