Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A former chief sub-editor at Klerksdorp Record who later worked as a freelance journalist passed away last week due to complications caused by cancer.

Collin Koortzen died on July 23, a day after his 62nd birthday. His sister, Mellaney Viljoen, cared for him the last few years. She is a former advertising manager of Klerksdorp Record.

Viljoen describes her brother’s last months as “terrible suffering due to cancer destroying most of his jawline”. She described her brother as a gentle soul and a genius.

He is an alum of Milner High School, and studied Communications in Potchefstroom. He worked at Klerksdorp Record between 1995 and 1999, and also worked at our sister newspaper, the Rustenburg Herald in the Planning and Training Department. He also headed this department.

Back in Klerksdorp he worked as a journalist and editor at a local advertising magazine, before being employed on a freelance basis by an international company as a language editor.

Collin, a divorcee, is survived by a son, as well as another sibling, Ivan.

His funeral service will be held at Oase Congregation at 11:00 on August 7.
