Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - The sewage flowing down Carlyle Street into a storm water drain, is at last being attended to.
For the past week, contractors could be seen working at the site where sewage water has been allowed to spill for weeks on end exposing residents to serious health risks and the most awful stench.
Cllr Orapeleng Moremedi said the DA is concerned about the continued collapse of basic service delivery in Orkney. “Pothole-riddled roads and raw sewage flowing through streets have become a daily reality in several parts of the town. These conditions are not only unacceptable but dangerous, undignified and a direct threat to public health and safety. Deep potholes are damaging vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents and making roads unsafe for motorists, pedestrians and emergency services,’’ he said.
He added that raw sewage contaminate the environment and residents are forced to live with these conditions while still being expected to pay rates and service charges for services that are not delivered.
According to him this ongoing neglect reduce property values and will have an impact on economic activity in town. The DA has called on the municipality to prioritise the repair of potholes and the resolution of sewer spillages in Orkney. “Residents require clear repair and maintenance schedules, immediate intervention on sewer spillages, proper monitoring of contractors, and transparent communication on timelines and progress,” Cllr Moremedi said.
The DA in Orkney has also issued a warning to residents to stop dumping refuse.
According to Cllr Johan Bornman, the Matlosana municipality has ordered officials to monitor areas prone to illegal dumping and fines to the tune of R10 000 will be issued to those found guilty of illegal refuse dumping.
