Klerksdorp Record, Hartbeesfontein - A police sergeant from Hartbeesfontein SAPS appeared in the magistrate’s court last week on charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

Sgt Ina van der Westhuizen was released on bail of R2 000. The case was adjourned to May 28 for further investigation.

According to Brig Sabatha Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, she was arrested due to the alleged theft of a murder docket in which a good friend of hers is apparently being investigated for murder.

A former reservist apparently discovered the docket in a closed bag that was handed to him. “He became suspicious, looked at what was in the bag and then disclosed it to the detective branch commander.’’

The matter has been reported to the provincial anti-corruption investigation unit (ACIU) for investigation.

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Sello Kwena praised the ACIU and Hartbeesfontein police for their quick response which led to the arrest of the accused. He said the police have no place for employees who are crooks.

A departmental inquiry was also launched against the accused. He thanked the whistle blower for informing the police about the incident.
