RUSTENBURG HERALD - PHOKENG - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Phokeng is raising concern about the increasing number of online fraud incidents targeting unsuspecting community members. Criminals continue to exploit digital platforms by crea-ting fake websites, posting fraudulent advertisements, and using deceptive tactics to trick victims into financial losses.

In one incident reported in Luka Village near Phokeng, a victim purchased “stop nonsense” slabs online for R6 500. The victim paid R1 400 upfront, allegedly for transportation costs, and a further R2 300 into a bank account. To date, nothing has been delivered, and all attempts to contact the seller have failed.
In a separate case, another victim attempted to purchase an SUV air conditioning unit and paid R1 500 upfront. The unit was never delivered, and the victim was even provided with a fake tracking number.
Safety tips to prevent online fraud
Buy from reputable websites: Only use trusted and  established online retailers with secure payment sytems.
Be aware of scams: Fraudsters often use fake websites or social media adverts to deceive buyers.
Do your research: Verify sellers, compare prices, and check independent reviews before making payments.
Check website security: Look for “https” and a padlock symbol in the web address.
Be cautious with personal details: Do not share information in response to unexpected messages or prize notifications.
Trust your instincts: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Report suspicious activity: Contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, use the MySAPS App, or visit your nearest police station.
The SAPS appeals to community members to remain alert, safeguard their personal information, and share these tips with family and friends. Together, we can help reduce the threat of online fraud.
