RUSTENBURG HERALD - THEKWANE - On Sunday, 1 February, at about 08:00, police responded to a report of a murder at a residential house in Berut Section, Thekwane Village outside Rustenburg. Upon arrival at the scene, police were directed to a locked room with a burglar door, where an African male suspect, aged 42, was found inside.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly confronted the deceased, an African male aged 50, after suspecting that the deceased was involved in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.
It is alleged that both the suspect and the deceased were employed at a local mine.
According to W/O Ofentse Mokgadi, Rustenburg police spokesperson, the suspect arrived at the deceased’s residence, knocked on the door and when the deceased opened, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the deceased below the clavicle. The suspect’s girlfriend was reportedly present inside the room at the time of the incident.
The injured victim was rushed to a near-by hospital, where he was certified dead upon arrival by medical personnel.
An Okapi knife, believed to have been used during the commission of the crime, was recovered at the scene.
The suspect was arrested and made his first appearance before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 3 February. Investigations are continuing.
