DA calls for Treasury probe into R20m Tlhabane West sports facility
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West is calling on National Treasury to urgently investigate the Rustenburg Local Municipality’s Tlhabane West Sports Facility project, which has become yet another symbol of mismanagement and potential corruption. Despite receiving nearly R20 million in Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funding, this project remains incomplete - three years after construction began - while the municipality has already burned through more than R17.5 million.

These were some of the comments made by Councillor Gert du Plessis during a Ward meeting on Wednesday, 29 January in the Old Town Hall. Out of sheer desperation, residents of Ward 15, 16 and 17 requested a meeting with Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) and the Mayor after continuous, lengthy electricity outages - the tip of the iceberg of the service delivery disaster in Rustenburg.
Brits residents take to the streets in Rustenburg over service delivery woes
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Alerts went out on various WhatsApp groups on Monday afternoon, 3 February, after protesters took to the streets in front of the local Eskom offices in Mabe Business Park.
In an unexpected turn of events, these protesters were not local residents but drove and were transported in a great number of vehicles from various informal settlements in the area of Brits.
Rustenburg Herald arrived on the scene to find approximately 150 community members sitting on sidewalks, talking in small groups and filing down the road to make their presence and dissatisfaction known with the national energy provider, Eskom.
DA calls for intervention on abandoned Koster Road Project
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - [On Monday, 27 January] the Democratic Alliance (DA) submitted a letter along with a petition signed by business owners of Koster to the MEC of Public Works and Roads, Lizzy Mokua, requesting her to urgently intervene in the incomplete road project of the R509 in Koster.
The MEC must also supply a comprehensive explanation about the project’s delays and the reasons for its abandonment.
North West Province welcomes improved dam levels
RUSTENBURG HERALD - NORTH WEST - The North West province has experienced a significant amount of rainfall this season, bringing much-needed relief to the region's water resources.
As a result, the province's dam levels have shown notable improvements over the past few weeks. According to the Department’s latest report on the country’s water levels, the overall dam levels in the North West province have increased from 64.7% to 72.5%. This upward trend will bring a relief to the province, and the department is optimistic that this upward trajectory will continue.
Police Constable dies in motor vehicle accident on N4
RUSTENBURG HERALD - MOOINOOI - South African Police Service (SAPS) management in North West is saddened by the death of a 32-year-old Constable, who lost her life during a motor vehicle accident that occurred at about 02:30 on Saturday, 25 January 2025, on the N4 road near Majakaneng village, outside Mooinooi.
According to information, two members driving in a state motor vehicle (Toyota Hilux), were on the way back to Mooinooi police station after attending to a complaint wherein four victims of an alleged hijacking reported earlier, were left abandoned next to the road in the Bapong area.
A road “less travelled”

Municipal Manager intervenes in lease agreement dispute - victory for sport
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - At Rustenburg Impala Rugby Club bonfires in celebration of a dispute which had been dragging on for the past four years were lit over the weekend, after the news broke that the Rustenburg Local Municipality’s Municipal Manager - Adv Ashmar Khuduge - had finally resolved a dispute as to the entity or holder of the only legitimate lease agreement between the Rustenburg Municipality and the premises of Rustenburg Impala Rugby Club.

Rustenburg Impala Rugby falls prey to “club capture”
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Tension is mounting and frustration is rising over the Rustenburg Municipality, and in particular the Municipal Manager's lack of intervention since control of the Rustenburg Impala Rugby Club was taken over in what could only be described as an illegal occupation by a third party benefiting from a good measure of confusion, resulting from unauthorised interference or downright meddling by the RLM's Director of Community Development - Mr Linda Jele.
